Letting go of lingering pain without having to share everything

IEMT helps you process traumatic memories and emotions through eye movements—online, at a gentle pace, and without long-term talk therapy.

Many people want to put something behind them but feel daunted by the thought of having to bring it all up again. At Ik wil verandering, you work with IEMT: a short-term approach that uses eye movements to reduce the emotional charge of memories, without requiring you to describe every detail. Janine guides you entirely online, at a calm, structured pace.

What you need to know

Method
IEMT (Integral Eye Movement Therapy) uses guided eye movements to reduce the emotional charge of memories, patterns, and beliefs. Its scope is broader than EMDR because it also addresses identity patterns.
Online sessions
Each session lasts 60 minutes and takes place entirely online by video call. There is nothing to install and no need to travel—you work from your own familiar surroundings.
Cost
The initial consultation costs €100 excluding VAT. Payment is processed securely through Stripe. During the consultation, you discuss what you would like to work on and whether IEMT is right for you.
Scientific basis
In March 2026, the first exploratory peer-reviewed study on IEMT was published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Psychotherapies. Among 33 participants, IEMT eye movements significantly reduced the emotional charge of negative memories, with results comparable to EMDR. This is an initial study; further evidence is still being developed.
For many people, processing trauma without talking sounds almost too good to be true. Yet that is exactly what IEMT makes possible. Not because talking has no value, but because some experiences sit deeper than words can reach. IEMT works directly on the emotional charge of a memory through eye movements, rather than endless conversations. You do not have to tell your whole story to make progress.

Why is talking alone sometimes not enough to process trauma?

You may know the feeling: you have discussed it dozens of times, yet as soon as you think about it, you feel the same knot in your stomach. That is not your fault. Traumatic experiences are stored in a way that is not always accessible through language. Talking helps you gain insight, but it does not always change how you feel. IEMT focuses on that emotional layer—the place where the reaction is held, not just the memory itself. This can allow something that previously felt stuck to shift.

How does IEMT differ from other approaches to processing trauma?

Imagine wanting to process something without going through the whole story again. IEMT does not ask you to relive every detail or describe it at length. Guided eye movements, similar to what your eyes do during REM sleep, reduce the emotional charge of a memory. While EMDR focuses primarily on traumatic memories, IEMT has a broader scope: it also addresses entrenched beliefs and identity patterns. The first exploratory study (Journal of Evidence-Based Psychotherapies, 2026) compared the two methods among 33 participants and found no significant difference in effect, with the caveat that this was an initial, small-scale study.

What can you expect when you begin working without talking?

The idea of processing trauma without lengthy conversations can raise doubts: does it really work? In her practice, Janine finds that clients describe something as 'feeling less heavy' after a session, as though the memory is still there but no longer triggers such a strong reaction. IEMT does not promise a magic solution or guarantee results. What it does offer is a structured, short-term approach that does not require you to go over everything again. Do you feel stuck or find yourself in an acute crisis? Please contact your GP or a qualified healthcare professional first.

Who is this approach suitable for—and who is it not suitable for?

IEMT for persistent emotions or memories is suitable for anyone, regardless of age, who feels that traditional talk therapy is not bringing enough change, experiences recurring emotional triggers, or would rather not go through their story in detail again. It can also be helpful for recurring phobias, fears, and negative self-images. IEMT is not a medical treatment and does not replace psychiatric care. For severe mental health difficulties, dissociation, or an active crisis, referral to a GP or mental health services is the appropriate first step.

What exactly happens in a session at Ik wil verandering?

You begin with a 60-minute initial consultation, held entirely online by video call, with nothing to install. The consultation costs €100 excluding VAT, and payment is processed securely through Stripe. Janine asks focused questions to understand what you would like to work on. During IEMT sessions, you follow a movement with your eyes while briefly focusing on a feeling or memory. You do not need to describe anything at length. After the session, you briefly discuss what you notice. The pace and depth are always tailored to what feels manageable for you at that moment.
