Many people seek help because they find that talking alone isn't enough. A memory that keeps resurfacing, an emotion that feels overwhelming, a belief about yourself that holds you back: these are exactly the situations Integral Eye Movement Therapy is designed for. This approach combines eye movements with focused questions to reduce the emotional intensity of experiences, without you having to relive every detail. At Ik Wil Verandering, you do this entirely online, through a calm, structured process.

What is IEMT therapy, and who is it suitable for?

Imagine this: you react to something, a comment, a situation, a smell, and the feeling that comes up is much stronger than the situation warrants. You recognise the pattern, but you can't stop it. Integral Eye Movement Therapy, or IEMT for short, is a short-term method developed for exactly this. Through specific eye movements, similar to those your eyes make while dreaming, persistent emotions and memories are reprocessed. Unlike EMDR, IEMT also focuses on negative beliefs and identity patterns: the deeper sense of 'who I am' that is also shaped by past experiences. The method is suitable for anyone, regardless of age, dealing with trauma, fears, phobias or persistent emotional triggers. You don't need to give an extensive account of your background; the approach is focused and efficient.

How does IEMT differ from other forms of therapy?

Many people who come to Ik Wil Verandering have already talked things through with friends, a coach or a therapist. Talking helps, but it doesn't always reach the heart of the issue. Integral Eye Movement Therapy works differently: it directly activates the brain's processing mechanism through eye movements while you focus on what is troubling you. This makes it fundamentally different from talking therapy. Compared with EMDR, IEMT has a broader scope: it addresses not only distressing memories, but also the beliefs and identity patterns that have grown out of them. In March 2026, the first peer-reviewed study on IEMT was published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Psychotherapies, conducted in part by researchers from Maastricht University. This exploratory study involving 33 participants found that both IEMT and EMDR eye movements reduced the emotional intensity of negative memories significantly more than a control condition, with no significant difference between the two methods. This is an initial exploratory study; larger studies are needed before further conclusions can be drawn.

What can you expect from a session at Ik Wil Verandering?

An IEMT session at Ik Wil Verandering lasts 60 minutes and takes place entirely online via video call, with no additional software to install. You start with an initial consultation costing €100 excluding VAT, during which you and Janine explore what you want to change and whether this approach is right for you. Then you begin working together: Janine guides you through the eye movements while you stay focused on what is troubling you. Many people experience a shift in how a memory or emotion feels during their very first session. That doesn't mean everything is resolved after one session, but you often notice quite quickly whether the method works for you. In cases of acute crisis or severe mental health conditions, Janine will always refer you to your GP or specialist support. IEMT is a method, not a medical treatment, and no guarantees of results are given.
