Expertise

Freedom from lingering pain, without reliving it endlessly

IEMT is a gentle approach to trauma that works through eye movements, rather than lengthy conversations about what you have been through.

You do not have to tell your story over and over to move forward. At Ik Wil Verandering, you work online with Janine using IEMT, a method that softens the emotional charge of memories without having to revisit everything in detail. Calmly, with structure, and at your own pace.

Method
IEMT uses eye movements to work with emotions, memories and patterns
Gentle trauma therapy does not mean avoiding anything. It means addressing the past in a way that does not overwhelm you. IEMT, Integral Eye Movement Therapy, does exactly that. Targeted eye movements reduce the emotional charge of a memory, without you having to talk about it for hours. Janine guides you through this online, working with Dutch- and English-speaking clients worldwide.

Why can talking about trauma feel like going through it all again?

Many people seek help but feel hesitant about traditional therapy: the thought of having to recall and describe everything feels overwhelming. That feeling is understandable. Some approaches do involve reliving painful experiences. IEMT works differently. You do not have to reconstruct the whole memory or put it into words. You briefly bring it to mind while Janine guides you through eye movements. The emotional charge eases, step by step, without unnecessary intensity.

What makes IEMT a gentle way to process trauma?

IEMT differs from other approaches because it addresses not only memories, but also the beliefs and identity patterns that developed from them. Think of thoughts such as 'I am not safe' or 'I am not good enough'. In an initial exploratory study (Journal of Evidence-Based Psychotherapies, 2026, with researchers from Maastricht University among others), IEMT eye movements significantly reduced the emotional charge of negative memories. In addition, 60% of participants, who were blinded to the conditions, experienced IEMT as gentler and calmer than the comparison condition. This was an exploratory study with 33 participants, not definitive proof, but a promising first step.

Who is this approach suitable for, and when do I refer you elsewhere?

As a gentle way to process trauma, IEMT is suitable for anyone, regardless of age, who is dealing with lingering emotions, recurring triggers, fears, phobias or painful experiences they want to let go of. It is a method, not a medical treatment. If you are in an acute crisis, have severe mental health difficulties or are unsure about your situation, I always recommend contacting your GP or a specialist healthcare professional first. Not sure whether IEMT is right for you? You are welcome to book an initial consultation, so we can honestly explore together whether this is a good fit for you.

Explore each topic in more depth

IEMT addresses different aspects of how you experience your past and your patterns. Whether you want to learn more about how eye movements affect emotions, what actually happens during a session, or how IEMT differs from EMDR, each section stands on its own and gives you the information you need to make an informed choice.
