Approach
IEMT, broader than EMDR, also addressing beliefs and identity patterns
Perhaps you have already tried all sorts of things: talking, reading books, following advice. Yet that same reaction, that feeling or that old memory keeps coming back. Eye movement therapy through IEMT works differently. It bypasses rational thought and directly addresses how your brain stores emotions. For many people, this makes it surprisingly fast and profound, even online.

What is eye movement therapy, and why does it work so differently?

Imagine thinking about something that has affected you for years, and after a few minutes of guided eye movements, it simply feels... less heavy. Not because you forget it, but because its emotional charge decreases. That is the essence of eye movement therapy. IEMT, short for Integral Eye Movement Therapy, uses bilateral eye movements to restart processing in your brain that has become stuck. It works with memories, but also with beliefs such as 'I am not good enough' and deeply rooted identity patterns. Where traditional talking therapy asks you to analyse and put things into words, IEMT only asks you to be present.

IEMT and EMDR: what is the difference for you as a client?

Many people know EMDR as an eye movement method for trauma. IEMT is similar, but goes further. As well as processing memories, IEMT focuses on the beliefs and identity patterns that have grown out of those experiences, such as 'I do not trust anyone' or 'I am always too much'. In March 2026, the first peer-reviewed study on IEMT was published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Psychotherapies, co-authored by researchers from Maastricht University. This exploratory study involving 33 participants found that both IEMT and EMDR eye movements reduced the emotional charge of negative memories significantly more than a control condition, with no significant difference between the two. This is an initial, exploratory study, so caution is still needed when interpreting the findings. Notably, 60% of participants preferred IEMT in a blinded comparison, experiencing it as gentler and calmer.

Who can benefit from an online eye movement therapy session?

You do not need to have experienced severe trauma to benefit from this approach. Many people who book a session at Ik Wil Verandering recognise one or more of the following: an emotional reaction that is repeatedly stronger than the situation calls for, a fear or phobia that keeps limiting you, a negative self-image that colours everything, or past experiences you cannot truly 'leave behind'. Online eye movement therapy works for people who want change without getting stuck in lengthy talking sessions. A session lasts 60 minutes and takes place entirely via video call, with no installation or travel required. The initial consultation costs €100 excluding VAT, and payment is handled securely through Stripe. If you are in an acute crisis or need intensive psychiatric support, please contact your GP first.
